Admission Best Practices

Admissions Internet Best Practices

Proven implementations of Internet strategies

It wasn’t that long ago that the marketing responsibilities of admissions offices centered on direct mail pieces, view books, videos and later CD’s.  And, if the budget would allow it, radio, TV and print advertising.

All that has changed as the behaviors of prospective students and their parents have become increasingly engaged and involved on the Internet.  This behavior change is offering an unprecedented opportunity for admission offices to communicate with and engage prospective students 24 hours a day, 7 days a week!

But few are taking advantage of it!

The reason is, the admissions industry has had decades to fine tune and perfect marketing using traditional direct mail and advertising techniques, however in relative time, only months to figure out how to use the Internet in student recruitment.  As a result there is a great deal of confusion that is resulting in a slower than needed adoption of Internet strategies that include social media, online community and interactive tools and services.

After talking to hundreds of admissions professionals, we felt there was a need to:

  • Learn the role admissions professionals believe the Internet will play in recruitment
  • Uncover proven implementations and use of Internet strategies, tools and techniques

Our initial research showed that nearly all admissions offices were “stabbing in the dark” while implementing Internet strategies.  All were trying strategies that were inspired by students, family, friends or information seen in the media.   This trial and error method not only has been time consuming, but the successes of the programs were hit or miss.   Our exhaustive research however did uncover a number of very successful ideas.

We discovered incredible tricks and tools using Facebook, MySpace and other social networking tools, effective e-communication techniques and effective social media tools.

Creating an Internet strategy for your admission office when you don’t know what you are doing can be time consuming and costly, but more importantly fraught with trial and errors.  Now you don’t have to “reinvent the wheel”.
