Increasing Contributions by Applying the Long Tail Theory

Using social media opens opportunities to reach a larger contributor pool!

The Internet is having a profound effect on fundraising.  One that is obvious, and  another that is less than obvious.

On the obvious front ,you have witnessed political candidates raise an amazing amount of money overnight, at less cost than was ever imaginable.  You have witnessed the generosity of people around the world contributing billions of dollars within weeks by simply pressing a button online.  You have also seen the behaviors of your contributors take a dramatic change as they find practical, entertaining and interesting information online.

Less obvious....

All this is opening an opportunity for your organization, but what is it?  It’s not quite obvious!

Chris Anderson’s book The Long Tail, suggests that businesses tend to focus on going after the easiest,  most obvious customers.  Some might call this the low hanging fruit. They focus their advertising, sales and marketing campaigns in areas where they can get the quickest return on their investment. They do that because they had not discovered a way to acquire that business in a cost effective way.  Businesses who use mass marketing techniques

That all changes says Anderson when you add in the Internet.  In his book Anderson shares research that shows that the big hits that record companies pay attention results them in leaving an equal amount of revenue on the table.  The Internet enables companies to provide an unlimited number of products and services to customers and gives them the ability to deliver them anytime, anywhere.

How does this affect you?

When you think about it, your contribution strategy, whether it’s for capital campaigns or annual giving is pretty much the same.  You focus on the people you know have - or will contribute.   But what if you use social media, online community and ecommunication techniques to expand your target audience?  Could you double your contributions?

Depending on the size of your fundraising campaign, it may be possible.
